Sup vs kayak speed test this is a very difficult comparison to make. when it comes to speed, it all comes down to type of vessel, water conditions, weather, and skill level of the paddler.. Essentially a paddle board allows you to use more energy, and more muscles, than if you were in a kayak, while all the time travelling at a slower speed. all of this combines to mean that you will cover less distance on a paddle board than if you had spent the same time and energy in a kayak.. We average 3-3.5 mph on most of our paddles depending on how many breaks we take and conditions. if i'm paddling with other fast kayaks i usually average 3.5-4+ mph. if we're going out recreationally with friends in slow kayaks it's 2.5-3 mph..
